Dondarian

The citizens of Dondarian are hardworking individuals whose primary focus lies on agriculture and trade. Featuring tall stone walls and multiple Civil Legion regiments, the city of Dondarian is a crucial resource for the kingdom of Ania. Additionally, there sits an expansive Crown Barracks near the exterior wall that accommodates any infantry troops operating within the region.   Situated directly adjacent to the imposing city walls, Dondarian is encompassed by The Emerald Wood. The Ores River flows through the center of town, and two sturdy gates operate at each entry point along its shoreline.   For centuries, the Yarrow Valley and its surrounding farmlands shipped their goods through Dondarian, both grown onsite or imported from afar. As a result of this, plus being home to one of the largest military forces in the country, Dondarian has evolved into an essential center for trade as well as political affairs.

Geography

Strategically built as a military camp on the narrowest spot of the Ores River, Dondarian ultimately turned into an integral shipping channel and flourished into a merchant city. It is located in the southern part of Tritos Dominion, surrounded by The Emerald Wood with the Ores River running through it; offering fresh water to its inhabitants while connecting them to trade by waterways.   Located among 10-foot high, sturdy stone walls, the city's paved roads are well-used. The downtown is a series of winding streets and stores called Purveyor's Plaza. On its southern edge beyond the outskirts of town lies a constantly shifting bazaar of merchant caravans that act as an additional market for local goods.

Demographics

The people of Dondarian are an industrious and hardworking society heavily focused on agriculture and commerce. Hundreds of farmers call Dondarian their home, although they live in the neighboring countryside instead of within the city's walls.   The city is residence to around 3,000 citizens and almost three times that number of Civil Legion soldiers. Approximately 3,000 troops are stationed directly in the city at any given time, with the majority housed in the Crown Barracks. While the rest currently call Dondarian their home, they are typically deployed elsewhere in the region.

History

Throughout its history, the city of Dondarian has continuously evolved. Established in 4,987 DA, it was originally a military post designed to protect what was then known as The Civil Kingdom. The town quickly became a place to facilitate trade as it was directly along a river and the safest place in the region. The area grew in prominence until becoming one of the most important cities in what was then known as the country of Sarros, now the Tritos Dominion.   Dondarian's power and control over the food supplies of an entire nation allowed merchants in the city to take advantage of the wealth. This led to the formation of an influential Merchants Guild which has lasted until today.   In recent times Dondarian's goods moving into and out of the city have slowed, stemming from multiple wars and the succession of Serawa and Frijring from the Tritos Dominion. Many of its citizens are now struggling with poverty as their goods go unsold or are taken by rebels along its shipping lanes. Baron Druceff has kept the majority of his Civil Legion troops nearby in an attempt to dissuade banditry.   The Baron has ordered the entire region to increase production, yet it has become commonplace for shipments to spoil waiting for the proper authority to move them. The Merchant Guild has currently set up a trade embargo with the neighboring town of Lolien, as many of the food trains headed north are hijacked or destroyed by rebels.

Government

Dondarian falls under the rule of the King of Ania, leader of the Tritos Dominion. Regionally it is run by Baron Druceff who lives in the city and oversees the countryside. The Baron currently operates under the order of Duke and Duchess Charmont of Tintown.   While the Baron has complete authority, the recent struggles of the region have made many of the locals question his rule.

Crime

Crime is a minor problem in Dondarian due to the high amount of Civil Legion that live in the city. Most illegal activities center around merchants thinking they can avoid taxes, something the Merchant Guild keeps a close eye on.

Defenses

Dondarian is a heavily fortified city. Ten-foot tall stone walls encircle the area, reinforced with guard towers and manned by the Civil Legion. The city has four garrisons within its walls, one at each entrance and an additional behind Chateau Druceff. The two entrances along The Ores each have a large gate capable of blocking passage.   Outside the walls is a well-equipped fortress known as the Crown Barracks. At any given time there may be 3,000 to 6,000 troops stationed in Dondarian.

Industry & Trade

To most merchants Dondarian is known as the “Gate of the South” and is an important hub for the movement of goods and services. Its large merchant fleets transport goods across the continent. The city also produces the majority of barley and oats for the region.   The Merchant Guild has become an integral part of Dondarian's economy with their powerful influence over trade activities. This creates a unique blend of old-money nobility, merchants, and craftsmen blending as they maintain their place at the top of the city's hierarchy.

Guilds & Factions

The Merchant Guild: The city's taxes play an important role in funding many parts of the kingdom and its strategic location makes it a valuable asset in times of war. As the crown views the city as an extremely important hub of trade, so too have merchants taken advantage of this position and profited off of it. The Merchant Guild has a very strong influence in Dondarian, keeping corruption in check but also squeezing out their profit.

House Druceff: A long-standing and influential house within the Tritos Dominion, House Druceff is and has been for generations the most important political group in Dondarian. Together with the Merchant Guild, they control all trade in and out of the south, as well as caring for the city's day-to-day issues. The current Baron and his family reside in Chateau Druceff.
