Pazago, Disciple of the Flames

Pazago is a druid cultist of Rodgort (god of destruction, fear, fire), determined to spread chaos. Once enthralled by a witch, he now suffers a lingering affliction: his body is weakened and his ability to concentrate is gone as his mind fixates only on destruction. Pazago’s attacks will be swift, targeting key locations to incite fear before he retreats to the woods.

Fire at the Gentle Rains Inn

Read Aloud.
You wake to the crackling of fire and the scent of smoke. A desperate scream cuts through: “Help! Fire!” the innkeeper’s voice echoes from downstairs.   Doors of rooms swing open, and other guests stagger into the hallway, shielding their faces as smoke floods the upper floor. Thick, choking air makes it hard to see.

  • The inn is on fire. Characters must make a DC 10 Dex save at the start of each turn to avoid catching fire, taking 1d6 fire damage on a failed save. Flames can be extinguished as an action. Each round the fire continues, the DC increases by 2.
  •
  • Upstairs. Four other guests are upstairs, requiring guidance to evacuate safely. 20 feet up, windows in each room.
  •
  • Rain’s cry for help. The innkeeper was attacked and locked in a pantry downstairs. If not helped she will die in the fire.
  •
  • Visibility. Smoke fills the inn, making vision limited to 10 feet.
  •
  • Civil Legion. The Civil Legion will arrive by Round 5 to help.
  •
  • Investigation Clue. After the fire is controlled, a DC 13 Investigation check reveals a pendant marked with the symbol of Serithell (goddess of art, elves, music). The Lawmaster can identify it as a stolen item from the Temple of Music and Song.
  •
  • Rain’s Testimony. Rain Norlochi swears she was attacked by a bear.

Lawmaster Quentin Le'Cheff

Quentin arrives as the fire is brought under control. Concerned by the nature of the blaze, he shares his suspicions with the characters, hinting at Lolien’s already delicate state. He urges them to investigate swiftly to prevent further chaos.

Temple of Music and Song

The temple is one of Lolien’s cultural centers. Characters arrive to find the interior partially damaged from small fires, with priests circled around a red gem. The priests have found what they think is a bomb in the main hall, set within a ritual circle. Inside is an Elemental Gemstone (red).
Hidden Bombs. There are 2 additional bombs hidden as well.
  • DC 13 Investigation. Concealed behind trees and shade along the temple’s outside back wall.
  • DC 16 Investigation. In a wardrobe on the 2nd floor.
  Bomb Mechanics

  • Disarm. Each bomb requires 3 successful checks to disarm. Arcana, Sleight of Hand, or Tinker Tools, DC 15. Disarming a circle dispels the gemstone. If an active gemstone is removed, the elemental remains loyal to Pazago until his death.
  •
  • Failure. On 2 failed checks, or trying to remove the gem, a fire elemental spawns, breaking the gem and attacking immediately.
  •
  • Timer. The gems detonate 5 rounds after discovery, dealing 4d6 fire damage in a 15-foot radius and freeing the elemental.
  •
  • Additional Clues. A DC 13 Survival reveals raccoon tracks leading to accelerant caches around the temple. Locals report hostile animal encounters at the inn and the Arda Elowen. A priest mentions seeing an owl repeatedly returning to the same tree daily, unusual for the daytime.
  •
  • Captured Fire Elemental. If contained, it reveals in Primordial that a druid is preparing for “the final blaze” at “the tree.”

The Arda Elowen

The ancient tree is Pazago’s final target. He intends to burn it down, causing irreparable damage to the town’s spirit. As the characters approach, Pazago is already setting accelerants. He greets them with fanatical fervor, prepared to fight to the end.   Transformation. Pazago uses his final wild shape to become a fire-infused T-Rex.   Battle Objective. Pazago prioritizes attacks against the characters while attempting to set the tree on fire. If he is not stopped, the Arda Elowen will ignite after 3 rounds.

Fire-Infused T-Rex

When in T-Rex form Pazago has the following additional abilities:
  • Fire Strikes. Melee attacks deal an extra 1d6 fire damage.
  • Heated Body. Creatures within 5 feet that hit him with a melee attack take 2d6 fire damage.
  • Flame Breath (Recharge 5–6). 15-foot cone, DC 15 Dexterity save; 7d6 fire damage on failure, half on success.

Rewards

Looting Pazago. Searching Pazago’s remains reveals an alchemist’s jug filled with oil.   Saving the Arda Elowen. If the characters save the Arda Elowen, they receive a magical seed. Planted anywhere, this seed will grow over the next year into a Greenman statue.   Payment Dispute. Lawmaster Quentin Le'Cheff is unavailable to pay. To receive a reward, they must plead their case to the local knight, Sir Kyler Clemons, a tight-fisted official. He argues that Lolien’s resources are needed for rebuilding and reluctantly offers only 200 gold, chastising the characters for expecting payment for protecting the town.
