Chapter 4

I knew I should have stayed in bed today.

I should have ordered takeout instead of going out to do the groceries. Sure, it's more expensive, but looks like this little trip is going to cost me my life after all!

My shield is broken. The pieces lay on the floor next to me while my shield arm bleeds abundantly. The axe in my other hand is chipped. All that damage on my weapon, and I only managed to scratch one of these orcs. The wound isn't even bleeding anymore.

I don't want to die! I'm just a small town girl who moved to the big city with stars in her eyes and dreams in her head. How could things end up like this? Why is life so unfair?

I rush forwards again, desperately hoping that this time will be different. However, the orc parries my axe again and sends me back flying with a strong kick. I think it broke some of my bones with that one.

I fall on the ground. I try to get back up, but putting pressure on my arm confirms that its broken, and I fall back down. The other adventurers are too busy dealing with their own enemies, so no one's going to help me.

I look up at my attacker while smiling aggressively. At the very least, I can be defiant until the end.

The orc seems to enjoy the situation as it raises its weapon to inflict the coup de grâce. However, I hear something break the sound barrier to my right, immediately followed by the orc spitting blood and collapsing. As it falls, I spot the rather large hole going through its neck.

I turn my head towards the direction from which I heard the sound. There, I see a beautiful sight. A woman, fully covered in green, blue and red flames. She's holding a sword in her right hand while her left hand shoots supersonic projectiles towards the remaining orcs. Her eyes, which appear as large orbs of gold, betray no emotion and serve as the only feature on her face.

An orc tries to rush and strike her, but she effortlessly cuts both its weapon and body in half using her sword before launching another projectile at an opponent distracted by another adventurer.

Oh, to fight alongside such a woman! I would give anything to have her notice me. I try to extend my arm in her direction, but the voice of a healer rings in my ear, telling me to stop moving.

And just as fast as she appeared, she jumps towards her next destination.

I can feel my heart beating faster as blood rushes to my cheeks. I really hope I get to meet her again. It's a bit embarrassing to admit even to myself, but I think I've fallen in love.

"I knew I should've stayed in bed today."
  Only always, yes.
